![]() Living Historians in the Twenty-first Century ![]() The current Tenth Virginia Volunteer Regiment originally reactivated in September. 1976. The local organization became active in August, 1991, and ever since has been recreating and interpreting the lives of Civil War era soldiers for the public. The main goal of our unit is to educate the public about the men of the original Tenth Virginia. This regiment was Rockingham Countys most prominent infantry regiment during the War Between the States. Some of the Companies were drawn from Page, Madison, and Shenandoah Counties as well, but most of the Companies came from Rockingham. The soldiers of the Tenth saw action in every major campaign that involved the Army of Northern Virginia from First Manassas to the surrender at Appomattox Court House. We are a progressive organization recreating the original unit as it was active in around 1862. Our authenticity requirements are strict, which results in a particularly authentic period impression. We drill and march the way our historic counterparts drilled and marched; when we are in uniform, we present to the public the life of a campaigning Confederate unit. We are serious about our mission of interpreting the life of the Confederate soldier. Our policy that If they didnt have it, we dont have it has served us well, and helped us establish a distinguished reputation for authenticity. Our unit maintains an active schedule, representing living histories for local schools and historical societies, community heritage associations and preservation organizations. We are members of the Independent Volunteer Rifles. In 1997, we partnered with the Association for the Preservation of Civil War Sites (now the Civil War Preservation Trust) at the McDowell Battlefield. We have conducted living history demonstrations at the New Market Battlefield State Historical Park, Malvern Hill, Gettysburg, and Manassas, as well as other sites. We have held living history demonstrations in schools, seasonal community fairs and local heritage days throughout our community. We have also participated in many Civil War reenactments both small and large, from Cedar Creek to Gettysburg. We often participate in preservation marches, parades, and memorial services. Our period impressions have brought us a variety of awards at heritage parades and festivals. Our unit membership is centered in Rockingham County, but extends from Page and Shenandoah Counties to Roanoke and Orange Counties. Some of our members are descendants of the original soldiers of the Tenth, but not by any means are all our membership Tenth descendents. The unit welcomes any and all individuals who want to learn about the real life of the Confederate soldier and want to pass their learning on to others.
